When we consider the use of blue pigments\/colors in cement products, it usually raises doubts for both manufacturers and promoters. The most requested services for projects tend to be:<\/p>\n

1. That they are stable pigments
\n2. That they have affordable prices
\n3. And, sometimes, they have intense tones<\/p>\n

Although there is currently no blue pigment that meets these three conditions simultaneously, let’s see what options there are.<\/p>\n

In the following photograph you can see three pieces of pressed semi-dry white concrete that have been pigmented with different blue pigments, where you can see some of their characteristic differences.<\/p>\n

Types of blue pigments<\/h2>\n

What blue pigments are most used to color cement products? Mainly cobalt blue, ultramarine blue and phthalocyanine blue.<\/p>\n

Cobalt Blues<\/strong>. They are a group of pigments obtained by calcining a mixture of spinel MgAl2O4 with other materials such as Co, Cr or Zn. The ions of these metals replace Mg, but the spinel crystalline structure is preserved, which is of extraordinary solidity to acids, alkalis and ultraviolet radiation. You can obtain different variants that will give rise to different colors according to the Color Index system:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Estos pigmentos tienen una fuerza colorante baja y un precio muy elevado, raz\u00f3n principal por la que su uso es reducido, aun siendo el m\u00e1s utilizado entre los azules para colorear productos de cemento.<\/p>\n

Azules de Ultramar<\/strong><\/span>. Son sulfosilicatos de sodio y aluminio que se obtienen de forma sint\u00e9tica desde el siglo XIX cuyo Color Index es PB 29.<\/p>\n

La principal aplicaci\u00f3n de este pigmento es en pl\u00e1sticos y, en menor medida, para tintas y pinturas. No se utiliza mucho en productos de cemento porque, aunque es un pigmento inorg\u00e1nico, en presencia de humedad y compuestos de calcio, se transforma en otro producto de color blanco, el aluminosulfosilicato de calcio. Es por ello que, durante el fraguado y posteriormente si se dan las condiciones anteriormente mencionadas, las piezas coloreadas con este pigmento puedan sufrir p\u00e9rdida de color. Debido a esto, hay que decir que no es un producto adecuado para colorear cemento. Sin embargo, algunos promotores y fabricantes lo usan si verifican que en su caso concreto el comportamiento es aceptable, ya que es considerablemente m\u00e1s econ\u00f3mico que el azul de cobalto. En cuanto a su fuerza colorante, est\u00e1 en un nivel similar o ligeramente superior a la del azul de cobalto y la tonalidad es marcadamente rojiza.<\/p>\n

Azul de Ftalocianina<\/strong><\/span>. Este azul lo encontramos entre las variantes del Color Index PB 15, concretamente es el 15.3, llamada variante beta, que frente a la variante alfa (Color Index 15.1), da una tonalidad azul verdosa.<\/p>\n

Ante la demanda de tonalidades azules intensas, y dado que los otros dos azules no las satisfac\u00edan, para casos muy concretos se utiliza este pigmento. Para su uso en productos de cemento o de ligantes hidr\u00e1ulicos, se le hace un tratamiento con agentes humectantes para posibilitar el uso en sistemas acuosos, ya que el producto original es hidr\u00f3fobo, es decir, no se moja con agua, lo que impide la dispersi\u00f3n y desarrollo del color.<\/p>\n

Este pigmento es de naturaleza org\u00e1nica, raz\u00f3n por la cual proporciona tonos limpios y una elevada fuerza colorante, pero tambi\u00e9n tiene ciertas debilidades en soportes como el cemento o en la intemperie. Tiene un tama\u00f1o de part\u00edcula muy inferior al de los pigmentos inorg\u00e1nicos de cobalto y ultramar, lo cual hace que no quede perfectamente anclado en la estructura del hormig\u00f3n y, al igual que ocurre con los negros de humo, puede llegar a la superficie a trav\u00e9s de los capilares vehiculizado por la humedad fruto de los ciclos de humectaci\u00f3n y exudaci\u00f3n y abandonar la pieza. Se dice entonces que el pigmento puede migrar a la superficie.<\/p>\n
